She did not stop asking

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. ² He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. ³ And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’

⁴ “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, ⁵ yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”

⁶ And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. ⁷ And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? ⁸ I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

Luke Chapter 18 – The Parable of the persistent widow

Jesus does something unusual at the opening of Luke 18. He tells us the purpose of the parable before He tells the parable. He wants us to know upfront: this story is about persistent prayer. It is not about working harder to earn God’s attention. It is about not abandoning your post.

The persistent widow in this story is a woman with no power, no status, no advocate. In the ancient Near East, a widow was among the most vulnerable members of society. She could not represent herself in court. She had no political standing. What she had was a case, a conviction, and the tenacity to keep showing up.

She appears before an unjust judge repeatedly; the Greek word for “continually coming” (v. 5) carries the idea of relentless, exhausting persistence. This woman would not be worn down, talked out, or turned away. And eventually, the judge grants her justice. Not because he changed his character. Because she refused to quit.

THREE TRUTHS FROM THIS PARABLE

Truth 1: The Parable Is Not About God’s Character; It’s About Ours

The unjust judge is NOT a picture of God. Jesus is making an argument from the lesser to the greater: if even a corrupt, cold-hearted judge eventually responds to persistent asking, how much more will your loving Father, who already delights in you, respond to your prayer? The point is not that God is slow or reluctant. The point is, don’t you dare stop asking.

Truth 2: Weariness in Prayer Is a Spiritual Battle

When you feel like your prayers are hitting the ceiling, that is not a sign that God has stopped listening. That is often the enemy’s most successful tactic: discouragement. Daniel 10 gives us a glimpse behind the curtain; his prayer was heard on Day 1, but warfare delayed the answer for 21 days. The battle was happening in the unseen. He kept praying. We must too.

Ephesians 6:18 commands us to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests… always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” The word “always” is not a suggestion. It is the posture of a woman who understands that prayer is not the last resort; it is the first line of defense.

Truth 3: Persistent Prayer Builds Faith, Not Just Results

Notice how Jesus ends the parable in Luke 18:8, “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” He connects persistence in prayer directly to the preservation of faith. Persistent prayer is not just about getting what you asked for. It is about staying in relationship with God long enough to become the kind of woman who trusts Him whether she sees the answer or not.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says “pray without ceasing.” The Greek is “adialeiptos”, without interruption, without a gap. It does not mean you must be on your knees 24 hours a day. It means prayer becomes the atmosphere of your life. You breathe in, you acknowledge God. You breathe out, you release it to Him.

If you are feeling like God is not answering your prayer, I want to encourage you to wait upon Him. He is faithful.

I will not grow weary. I will not give up. My prayers are not falling on deaf ears; they are landing at the throne of a God who hears, who sees, and who answers. I will keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking. Not because I earned it, but because He promised it. I am a woman of persistent faith.

Refuse to be a woman who quits. Remind yourself that God is still moving even when we cannot see it.
