God Will Use What You Have: 6 Lessons from the Widow’s Oil
God will use what you have even when it feels like you don’t have much to offer. Have you ever looked at your life and thought, “I just don’t have enough”? Not enough money, not enough time, not enough faith, not enough opportunities.
That’s exactly how the widow in 2 Kings 4:1–7 must have felt. Her husband had died, leaving her in debt, and her creditors were coming to take her two sons as slaves to pay off what she owed. Everything in her life screamed “not enough.”
But then the prophet Elisha asked her one question that changed everything:
“Tell me, what do you have in your house?” 2 Kings 4:2 (NIV)
She replied, “Your servant has nothing there at all,” and then almost as an afterthought, she added, “except a little oil.”
And that’s where her miracle began.
1. God Will Use What You Already Have
It’s easy to look around and focus on what we’ve lost or what we don’t have. But Elisha’s question reminds us that God will use what you have, even when it feels too small to matter.
God didn’t send the widow gold or silver from heaven. He didn’t tell her to borrow money or find someone new to marry. He asked her to look inside her own house. The solution was already there; she just couldn’t see it because she was focused on the lack.
Sometimes our breakthrough doesn’t come from something new. It comes from God breathing life into what’s already in our hands.
Maybe for you, it’s a skill you’ve dismissed, a relationship you’ve neglected, or a small opportunity that feels insignificant. Whatever it is, bring it to God. He can multiply it.
2. Faith Requires Action
Elisha told the widow to go and borrow jars from her neighbours, “Don’t ask for just a few.” Then, she was to start pouring her tiny bit of oil into every jar she could find. Faith without action is just an idea. The miracle didn’t happen when she believed she could pour; it happened when she started pouring.
If you want to see God move, you have to make a move too. Apply for the job. Send the proposal. Start the business. Share your story. God blesses movement, not hesitation.
When you’re in a situation that looks impossible, remember that God will use what you have, but you must take the first step.
“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” — James 2:17
3. Don’t Limit God
Elisha’s words were clear: “Don’t ask for just a few.” If she had borrowed only three jars, her miracle would’ve been small. But because she gathered as many as she could, the oil kept flowing until every jar was full. That’s how faith works. The size of your expectation often determines the size of your blessing.
When you pray small, you limit what God wants to do. When you expect little, you receive little. But when you believe boldly, God meets you with abundance.
Don’t settle for survival when God wants you to thrive. You serve a big God who does big things.
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” — Ephesians 3:20
4. Obedience Unlocks Provision
The oil didn’t start flowing until the widow obeyed. She could have argued or questioned Elisha’s instructions. She could have said, “What’s the point? This doesn’t make sense.” But she didn’t. She just did it. That’s the beauty of simple obedience. You don’t always understand it; you just trust that God knows what He’s doing.
Many of us want the miracle without the instruction. But every miracle in Scripture was tied to obedience. The widow had to pour. The Israelites had to march. Peter had to cast his net again. If you’re believing for a breakthrough, ask yourself: Have I obeyed what God last told me to do?
God will use what you have when you bring it under His direction.
5. God Multiplies the Little Things
The oil didn’t multiply all at once. It flowed as she poured. That’s how God works, He multiplies as we move.
It’s the same pattern we see throughout Scripture:
- A boy’s lunch fed thousands.
- Moses’ staff parted the Red Sea.
- Gideon’s small army defeated a massive one.
In every case, God used what they had and turned it into more than enough. You don’t need to have everything together for God to move. You just need to bring what you have, however small, and trust Him to do the rest.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
6. There Is Blessing in Obedience, Faith, and Hard Work
The widow’s obedience brought freedom. The same oil that once looked insignificant became her miracle. She paid her debts, kept her sons, and had enough to live on. That’s what happens when you trust God with what’s in your hands.
There is blessing in obedience.
There is blessing in faith.
There is blessing in hard work.
Your miracle might not come in the way you expect, but it will come when you act on what God has already placed in your life.
7. Reflection: What Do You Have in Your House?
Maybe right now you feel like that widow, stretched thin, overwhelmed, unsure how you’ll make it through. But ask yourself the same question Elisha asked her:
“What do you have in your house?”
What gifts, resources, or opportunities has God already given you that you’ve overlooked?
It might be time, creativity, faith, or even a small platform where you can start encouraging others. Whatever it is, offer it back to God. Because God will use what you have, and He’ll do more with it than you ever could on your own.

A Prayer for Today
Father,
Thank You for reminding me that I already have something You can use. Help me to stop focusing on what I lack and start seeing what’s already in my hands. Give me faith to act in obedience, to trust You with the little I have, and to believe that You can multiply it into more than enough. Use my gifts, my time, and my efforts for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
