Facing Your Giants: 5 Ways to Find Confidence in God
We all face “giants” challenges that intimidate us, drain us, or make us doubt ourselves. Sometimes those giants are emotional, like fear or rejection. Sometimes they’re practical like bills, sickness, unemployment, or strained relationships. And sometimes they’re internal like, shame, comparison, insecurity, or self-doubt.
The story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 isn’t just a Sabbath School tale. It’s a real-life lesson on facing your giants with faith, not fear and remembering that God is always bigger than what stands against you.
1. Remember What God Has Already Done
Before David fought Goliath, he remembered his past victories.
He told King Saul,
“The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” — 1 Samuel 17:37, NIV
David didn’t focus on what he didn’t have, he focused on what God had already done.
That’s how faith grows. When you face your own giants, look back at what God has already brought you through.
He was faithful before, and He’ll be faithful again.
Practical tip: Write down three times God came through for you in the past. Keep that list somewhere visible. When doubt creeps in, read it again.
2. Stop Measuring Your Giant, Magnify Your God
The Israelite army spent days talking about how big Goliath was. David showed up talking about how big God was.
“You come to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty.” — 1 Samuel 17:45, NIV
When all we do is measure the size of our problem, our faith shrinks. But when we focus on God’s power, our perspective changes.
Facing your giants starts with focusing more on God’s power than your problem.
Ask yourself:
Am I magnifying my challenges, or am I magnifying God?
Remember:
When you focus on giants, you stumble.
When you focus on God,your giants stumble.
3. Speak Faith Out Loud
David didn’t stay silent. He declared his victory before the battle began.
He said,
“The battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” — 1 Samuel 17:47, NIV
Faith speaks. When you’re facing your giants, your words matter. Speak Scripture instead of fear.
Say:
- “God is with me.” (Isaiah 41:10)
- “No weapon formed against me will prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17)
- “The Lord will fight for me; I need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)
Practical step: Write down one Scripture you’ll declare this week whenever your “giant” tries to intimidate you.

4. Take Action in Faith
David didn’t wait for Goliath to come closer, he ran toward him.
That’s powerful.
He didn’t wait until he felt brave; he acted because he trusted God.
“As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.” — 1 Samuel 17:48, NIV
Sometimes, facing your giants means taking one small step forward, applying for the job, making the phone call, forgiving someone, starting therapy, or setting a boundary.
God doesn’t bless passivity; He blesses faith in motion.
Practical tip: What one “giant-facing” step can you take this week? Write it down and ask God for courage to follow through.
5. Trust That the Battle Is the Lord’s
This is the heart of it all.
David’s confidence wasn’t in his sling, it was in his Savior.
“The Lord does not save with sword or spear; for the battle is the Lord’s.” — 1 Samuel 17:47, NKJV
When you’re facing your giants, remember:
The outcome doesn’t depend on your strength but on God’s sovereignty.
Your job is obedience. God’s job is victory.
Practical tip: Every morning this week, pray this:
“Lord, this battle belongs to You. Help me do my part and trust You with the rest.”
What Are the Giants You’re Facing Today?
Maybe your “giant” is fear, financial pressure, a health crisis, or a habit you can’t shake. Whatever it is, it doesn’t have the final word. God does.
So today, face your giants with confidence.
Run toward them knowing that God fights for you and victory already belongs to Him.
“If God is for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31, NIV
A Short Prayer for Confidence in God
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for fighting for me even when I feel afraid.
Help me face my giants with courage and faith, remembering that You are bigger than every challenge I face.
Teach me to trust You in the battle, to speak faith instead of fear, and to move forward with confidence in Your power.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
