4 Truths That Show Jesus Is My Help in Times of Trouble
Jesus is my help in times of trouble, and John 6:16–21 reminds me of that in the most practical and comforting way. For years, I read this passage and mainly focused on the miracle: Jesus walking on water. But this story is more than a miracle; it’s a picture of how Jesus steps into our storms even when we feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or completely unseen.
Recently, I revisited this passage while reading William Barclay’s commentary on the book of John, and it opened my eyes to four powerful truths about the character of Jesus. These truths are not just for the disciples on that boat, they are for you and me today.
Let’s walk through them together.
1. Jesus Comes, He shows up right when we need Him most
The disciples had been rowing for hours, fighting against the wind and waves. They were tired, drained, and probably close to giving up. And that is when Jesus came to them.
He didn’t remove the storm immediately.
He didn’t take over their rowing.
He simply showed up, and His presence changed everything.
Sometimes we expect God to fix the situation instantly, but He often begins by reminding us that we’re not alone.
In our lives, Jesus comes through:
– a verse that suddenly hits home
– a message in church that speaks to exactly what you’re going through
– a friend who encourages you without knowing what you needed
– a quiet peace that settles your heart
You may not see Him walk toward you physically, but He always shows up.
2. Jesus Watches, He sees every struggle even when He feels far
John’s Gospel says Jesus was on the mountain praying while the disciples were on the water. But He wasn’t disconnected. He saw everything that was happening.
They felt alone.
They felt afraid.
They felt like they were fighting a losing battle.
But Jesus had been watching them the entire time.
This truth changed me:
Jesus watches with love, not with frustration.
He doesn’t stand at a distance shaking His head.
He doesn’t say, “Why can’t she get it right?”
He doesn’t abandon us in the struggle.
He sees every tear, every fear, every moment when you feel like you’re barely holding things together.
Just like a parent watching a child learn to walk, Jesus watches with compassion, protection, and patience.
3. Jesus Helps, His presence brings supernatural strength
When Jesus reached the disciples, He simply said, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
Sometimes His help doesn’t come in the form of a dramatic rescue.
Sometimes His help is a reminder of who He is:
“I am here.”
“I am with you.”
“You don’t need to fear this storm.”
Scripture says immediately the boat reached the shore they were heading toward.
With Jesus, distance collapses.
With Jesus, battles shorten.
With Jesus, what felt impossible becomes manageable.
He doesn’t always change the situation instantly, but His presence changes you instantly.
When Jesus is part of the journey, the weight lifts, the panic settles, and hope rises again.

4. Jesus Brings Us to a Haven, He leads us into rest after the storm
After the stormy night, Jesus didn’t just get them to land; He gave them a place of rest. In another gospel account, we learn that Jesus had fish and a fire ready for His disciples. He brought them comfort after chaos.
That is His heart for us.
Jesus doesn’t only save you from the storm;
He brings you into a haven, a place of:
– rest
– peace
– comfort
– safety
– renewal
Some seasons feel endless, but God always leads His people to a place of rest. You won’t be in this storm forever.
