Rest in Jesus: 7 Powerful Reasons to Lay Down Your Burdens Today
Rest in Jesus, the invitation is simple, but many of us struggle to accept it. Jesus says:
“Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28–30 (KJV)
It sounds beautiful, but if we’re honest, most of us don’t truly live this way. We love Jesus, yet we move through life carrying weights He never asked us to carry.
Let me paint a picture.
1. You’re Carrying Luggage Jesus Never Meant for You
Imagine running through an airport with two huge suitcases, a handbag, and a smaller bag that keeps falling to the floor. You’re late for your flight, exhausted, overwhelmed, and frustrated , yet you keep gripping everything tightly because you don’t trust anyone to hold your belongings for you.
You run past the trolleys, the very thing designed to help you.
That’s exactly what we do with life.
We hold onto the stress, the fear, the anxiety, the bills, the loneliness, the waiting, the confusion… and we try to carry it all in our own strength.
Meanwhile Jesus is standing right there saying:
“Give it to Me.”

2. Jesus Wants Your Heavy Load, All of It
Jesus didn’t say we wouldn’t face problems. He didn’t say life would be smooth. But He did say:
- “I will carry the heavy side.”
- “My yoke is easy.”
- “My burden is light.”
A yoke always has two sides.
And Jesus carries the heavier side.
You carry the lighter one, the part you can handle.
What a loving God.
3. Jesus Understands Your Pain More Than You Realise
The Bible says:
“For we have not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities…”
Hebrews 4:15 (KJV)
Jesus knows exactly what you’re dealing with:
- hurt
- disappointment
- loneliness
- pressure
- waiting
- rejection
- fear
He gets it.
He has felt it.
And He cares deeply.
So when He says “Come,” He’s not speaking as a distant God. He’s speaking as Someone who truly understands.
4. Many of Us Don’t Rest Because We Don’t Trust
Let’s be honest.
The reason we hold onto our burdens is simple:
We have trust issues.
People have disappointed us.
Friends have failed us.
Family has let us down.
Leaders have hurt us.
So we subconsciously think Jesus is like them.
But He isn’t.
Instead of running to Jesus, most of us run to:
- friends
- group chats
- venting sessions
- social media
- distractions
We talk for hours.
We complain.
We overthink.
We cry.
But we don’t pray.
No rest comes from that.
Rest is found in one place: Jesus.
5. Rest Comes From a Daily Relationship, Not a Quick Fix
Psalm 20:7 says:
“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord.”
Trust is built through relationship — not emergency prayers.
You talk to your friends every day, right?
But Jesus often gets the leftovers.
If you want to truly rest in Jesus:
- spend quiet time with Him
- talk to Him daily
- study His Word
- worship intentionally
- strengthen your trust muscle
The more you do this, the easier it becomes to hand Him your burdens.

6. Rest Requires Surrender and Surrender Is Hard
Ellen White explains this so well:
“It is a terribly hard struggle to give up your own will and your own way.”
SDA Bible Commentary Vol. 5
It really is hard.
We love control.
We love knowing the outcome.
We love having a plan.
But trust and surrender cannot exist together.
To rest in Jesus, you must let go:
- your timeline
- your fear
- your expectations
- your comparisons
- your need to control everything
Surrender opens the door to peace.
7. When You Truly Rest in Jesus, Your Soul Finally Breathes Again
Isaiah 40:31 promises:
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…”
Strength comes when you stop running with your burdens and place them on the trolley, Jesus Himself.
Rest is not passive.
Rest is not laziness.
Rest is not giving up.
Rest is surrendering the weight you were never created to carry.
And when you do that, your soul breathes again.
Your mind quiets.
Your heart softens.
Your fear dissolves.
Your peace returns.
Jesus carries what crushes you.
What burden are you carrying today?
Bills?
Loneliness?
Marriage struggles?
Waiting for a child?
Deadlines?
Fear of the future?
Feeling stuck?
Leave it with Jesus.
Run to Him.
Yoke up with Him.
Rest in Him.
He’s not asking you to pretend you’re strong.
He’s asking you to come, exactly as you are, and let Him carry the weight.
