Spiritual Warfare for Christians: 7 Powerful Truths About Your Real Enemy
Spiritual warfare for Christians is something many people talk about, yet very few truly understand in a practical, everyday way. When most of us think about the battles we face, we immediately think of the people around us, the spouse who frustrates us, the friend who disappointed us, the parent who misunderstood us, or even strangers who cross our paths the wrong way. But Scripture makes it very clear: the people in our lives are not our enemy.
1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” The Bible points us straight to the real adversary. A dear friend recently told me she’s relieved that more believers are finally recognising that the devil, not each other, is the one behind division, conflict, and emotional attacks. And it’s true. We spend so much time fighting the wrong battles, with the wrong weapons, and against the wrong target, that we end up exhausted and spiritually unprotected.
Most of us have been guilty of this. We fight with our spouse, our kids, our siblings, co-workers, church members, and even strangers online. But Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood…” which means the person you’re arguing with is not your true enemy. The irritation, anger, miscommunication, and hurt feelings may be real, but the source behind it is spiritual. When we forget this truth, we end up in emotional chaos, drained and defeated because we’re swinging at the wrong opponent.
When someone upsets you, your natural response is to throw words, attitude, silence, or anger back at them. But none of these weapons work in the spiritual realm. When the devil is behind an attack, using earthly weapons will never win the battle. Instead of reacting to people, we need to respond to God.
This is why spiritual warfare for Christians is not about shouting, calling down fire, or engaging in dramatic prayers. It begins with clarity, recognising who the battle is actually against. When someone hurts you, triggers you, or pushes you to your limit, the first question you must ask yourself is: “Is this really them, or is this the enemy trying to use this moment to steal my peace?”
Once you understand the true battlefield, everything changes.
When you are under attack emotionally or mentally, you cannot fight in your own strength. You need to be covered by God, standing in His armour, not your own reactions. That’s why God instructs us in Ephesians 6:13-18 to put on:
- The belt of truth
- The breastplate of righteousness
- The shoes of peace
- The shield of faith
- The helmet of salvation
- The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God
- And to remain in continuous prayer
Notice something important: none of these pieces of armour are physical weapons. They are spiritual tools, truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, Scripture, and prayer. These are the only weapons that work against the enemy we are actually fighting.
Truth exposes his lies.
Righteousness protects your heart.
Peace stops emotional chaos.
Faith blocks fiery arrows of fear and doubt.
The Word of God destroys every deception.
And prayer brings God into the battle.
This is why the enemy loves to distract us into fighting each other. Because as long as you’re arguing with people, you’re not fighting him. And if you’re not fighting him, you’re losing.
At the beginning of every new month, it’s wise to pause and reset your understanding of spiritual warfare. Instead of stepping into another cycle of frustration, ask God to open your eyes to the real enemy. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you discernment to see when the devil is trying to provoke you through people. And pray for wisdom to respond spiritually, not emotionally.
Ellen G. White makes a beautiful statement: “If we have on the heavenly armour, we shall find that the assaults of the enemy will not have power over us. Angels of God will be round about us to protect us.” This is not poetic language, it is a promise. When you stand in the armour of God, heaven fights for you.
So as you go through this week, remember:
You’re not fighting your family.
You’re not fighting people.
You’re not fighting strangers.
Your fight is spiritual.
Your victory is spiritual.
And your weapons must also be spiritual.
Ask God to strengthen you. Ask Him to clothe you. Ask Him to help you stand. And let every battle push you closer to God rather than deeper into conflict.
